One of the most important aspects of a CPQ is to guide your sales team in how to configure products to meet the requirements of the customers meanwhile being technically functional. This is done in Combinum using a number of different types of rules, from simple to advanced and sometimes using a combination of rules.

Rules that control how a product can be configured work by:

preventing disallowed combination of choices

asking only relevant questions

selecting required options automatically

suggesting recommended options

verifying that mandatory questions have been answered

Behind the scenes advanced rules might depend on the result from other logical CPQ executions like calculations and lookup of data in tables.

In the world of CPQ the term constraint usually refers to a type of rule where a logical relationship is created between different parts of a product, e.g. that the diameter of the rims and the tires of a bicycle must match. These types of rules can be created in Combinum, but for simplicity the term rule is used for all kinds of rules that control the configuration of products.
